Installation and use of Vmware tools

VMware Tools is a suite of utilities that enhances the performance of the virtual machines guest operating system and improves management of the virtual machine. Without VMware Tools installed in your guest operating system, guest performance lacks important functionality. Installing VMware Tools eliminates or improves these issues:

• Low video resolution
• Inadequate color depth
• Incorrect display of network speed
• Restricted movement of the mouse
• Inability to copy and paste and drag-and-drop files
• Missing sound
• Provides the ability to take quiesced snapshots of the guest OS
• Synchronizes the time in the guest operating system with the time on the host
• Provides support for guest-bound calls created with the VMware VIX API

VMware Tools includes these components:

• VMware Tools service
• VMware device drivers
• VMware user process
• VMware Tools control panel

VMware Tools is provided in these formats:

• ISOs (contain .tar files): These are packaged with the product and are installed in a number of ways, depending upon the VMware product and the guest operating system installed in the virtual machine. For more information, see the Installing VMware Tools section. VMware Tools provides a different ISO file for each type of supported guest operating system: Windows, Linux, NetWare, Solaris, and FreeBSD.
  

• Operating System Specific Packages (OSPs): These are downloaded and installed from the command line on an ESXi/ESX host. VMware Tools is available as separate downloadable, light-weight packages that are specific to each supported Linux operating system and VMware product. OSPs are an alternative to the existing mechanism for installing VMware Tools and only support Linux systems running on ESXi/ESX.  Installation of vmware tools :

   In Kali linux :

1. First, update your Kali Linux 2. To do this, open up terminal and write the command below:

1	apt-get update && apt-get upgrade -y

2. Second, Install appropriate Kali Linux 2 headers by typing command below:

1	apt-get install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r)

3. In the VM Menu of the VMware Workstation, Click Install VMware Tools. This mounts a virtual CD-ROM drive containing the VMware Tools installation files.

  

4. Click Open With Files on the pop-up menu inside Kali Linux.

5. You need to extract VMwareTools-9.x.tar.gz file. To do this, right click the file and then choose Extract To.

6. Choose destination. In this article I choose /tmp directory as shown below.

7. Now we are ready to install VMware-Tools binaries. To do this, open up your terminal again, if it is not already opened and then write the command below in order to install VMware Tools in Kali Linux 2 with the default parameters.

1 2	cd /tmp/vmware-tools-distrib/ ./vmware-install.pl -d

8. After Installation is done, you need to reboot your virtual machine.

Installing VMware Tools in Kali Linux 2 done! After Kali Linux 2 virtual machine starts, you should be able to use drag and drop files feature and can resize or adjust vm screen.

In Windows :

1. For installing  Vmware tools in windows simply open Vmware workstation 

1. right click on windows machine in side bar.

1. a pop-up menu appears,click on install vmware tools.

1. Then install the tools and it's done.
